Dialysis patients living in Lunenburg County will soon be able to receive the life saving treatment closer to home.
According to a release from the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, a new 12 chair, 5,600 square foot Dialysis Unit is coming to South Shore Regional Hospital as part of the redevelopment plan announced by the province last year.
Dialysis typically requires patients to be connected to a machine multiple times per week for at least a few hours.
Currently, dialysis patients living in Lunenburg County must travel to Halifax or Liverpool three times per week to receive the treatment.
South Shore Regional Hospital Redevelopment Project Co-Lead and Operations Site Lead, Rob Zwicker said dialysis is a significant time commitment for patients and their families.
“We are thrilled the Redevelopment Project will bring Dialysis to our hospital,” said Zwicker “Bringing this service closer to home will lead to an improved patient experience and improved quality of life.”
The new Dialysis Unit will help alleviate pressure on resources in the Central Zone while increasing the capacity to treat local patients.
The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore will have more news about its volunteer-led fundraising effort in the coming months.
