I’m beginning to think the bears have it right. Maybe we should all just hibernate for the winter. Crawl into a hole and just sleep the next few months away.
First, it was the great silicon chip shortage. Then, a shortage of shipping containers. Next up, a shortage of people to unload those containers. And a shortage of truck drivers to deliver the goods. A shortage of pet food. A shortage of turkeys. A shortage of summer savory. Now, a shortage of cereal.
At least some cereal.
Some of these shortages are pretty serious. And some have no relation to the pandemic. The cereal shortage is apparently the result of a labour dispute. A rather nasty one, from the sound of it. But the result is Snap, Crackle and Pop are missing from store shelves.
This was causing me some concern. As part of my Christmas baking I have a recipe that calls for… yep… Rice Krispies. I don’t need much. Only a cup or so.
But that was enough to have me crawling around in various cupboards, to see what I can find. I did find a box. There are slightly more in the box than what I will need. I’m not sure how old they are, but they don’t go bad. Do they? Maybe get a bit stale, but if I bake them a bit they should be okay.
I briefly thought about selling this partial, stale box of cereal online, charging tremendous prices for old cereal. But that would be wrong. Rather Grinch-like in some ways.
And as for cereal to actually eat, if I do choose to eat cereal it is generally something else. Or there are always other brands. Everyone seems to make a version of the same thing. So at least when it comes to cereal, we have options.
But there always seems to be a shortage of something at present. And as one shortage works itself out, another comes along. Hibernation could be the answer. The bears better move over and make room. But I’ll bring the Rice Krispy treats. Although they might be made with a generic brand.
