Let’s talk Christmas dinner.
I am not going to get into the fact that in this day and age I really wonder why some smart scientist has not come up with a turkey with multiple drumsticks. I mean, we can change genes on any number of things these days. Has not one thought how great it would be to have extra drumsticks?
I know, not everyone likes them, but there are plenty who do. And I’m sure there is more than one battle over the drumsticks at dinner tables at this time of year. So why not just add a few more? Sure a six legged turkey might look a bit weird, but it could also be delicious.
Anyway, that’s not where I wanted to go today. I wanted to talk side dishes.
We always cook too many side dishes. Everyone has a favourite, or at least one they would prefer over others. Some people like carrots, so there have to be carrots. Some people like squash, so there has to be squash. Some people like turnip. I’m not sure who those people are, but apparently we have to have it. And potatoes. And dressing. And… is there any room left on the plate for one of those drumsticks? Good thing they have built in handles.
But we have a few favourites. Some have come and gone because not everyone likes them. And there seems to be too many.
For the past several years, we have not done actual mashed potatoes. We make a potato casserole. It’s mashed potato, but with sour cream and cream cheese mixed in. Quite tasty.
I used to do a green bean and onion dish, but since a lot of younger ones weren’t into it, that has fallen out of favour lately. That was French cut green beans and onions, sauteed in garlic butter with lemon and basil. I love them, but others have spoken.
But there our others I would like to try. I know many people might not like this at all, but I really want to try Brussels sprouts. You know, the ones that are covered in bacon fat. I don’t mind Brussels sprouts. And I firmly believe bacon should be a part of any meal. But again, no room.
And also over roasted parsnips. Love them.
But there are just too many side dishes.
Maybe we should just forget the main course and just do side dishes.
