Construction has begun on the IWK Health Centre’s new emergency department.
Workers broke ground Monday.
Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness, said it’s an exciting step forward.
“This project will mean a larger, more modern facility for patients, families, physicians and staff, and will also ensure the IWK continues to meet the standards of care that it is well known for around the Maritimes.”
Officials say the construction will help address an increase in patients and new infection control standards.
The new ER will sit on University Avenue in Halifax, next to the existing parking garage and near the front of the Children’s Building. The current emergency department is on the opposite side of the block on South Street.
The $102 million dollar project will more than double the size of the IWK’s emergency room. It’s expected to be finished by 2025.
