The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is purchasing two electric vehicles to replace ones that are aging out.
On Thursday, the municipality announced that they have purchased a used 2021 Ford Mach-e from a local dealer at a cost of $69,000 and a 2022 Volvo XC-40 at a cost of $79,689 from Volvo Halifax.
Mayor Carolyn Bolivar Getson says that there were gas alternatives available at cheaper prices but they were not considered due to environmental concerns.

“With our municipal emissions goal of reducing emissions by 40 percent below 2019 levels, we know that we will have to move towards making our fleet electric,” Bolivar Getson said. She went on to add that most vehicle purchases made by the municipality are likely to be EVs.
In addition to the EVs reducing emissions, they will also reduce annual operational expenses, with the municipality estimating they will save $4,200 on fuel alone. They also expect maintenance costs on the vehicles to be lower as EVs generally require less maintenance and have fewer parts.
The new vehicles will be used by municipal staff, primarily for park and trail maintenance and property inspections.
