The Town of Lunenburg passed amendments to its noise bylaws at its latest council meeting that ban the use of private fireworks within town limits.
In recent years more and more residents have been raising concerns over fireworks, claiming they can be disturbing to people sensitive to loud noises, pets, and wildlife.
The new bylaws do allow for fireworks to be used for organized events sanctioned by the town for things like Canada Day or New Years.
The penalty for lighting unauthorized fireworks within the town will carry a $237 fine.
Changes were also made to the town’s evening quiet hours policies. Previously quiet hours came into effect a half-hour before sunset, however, council felt that made it hard for residents to keep track of so it will now begin daily at 11:00 p.m. regardless of the sun.
