Sarah Mitton will be one of the 54 athletes from Canada attending the World Championships in Eugene Oregon later this summer.
Mitton who hails from Brooklyn, Nova Scotia is arguably enjoying the best stretch of her career, which has seen her set the national indoor shotput record, the national outdoor record twice and most recently she claimed her career-best Diamond League result on Thursday in Stockholm, placing second in shot put with a top throw of 19.90 metres.
That performance came less than a week after Mitton set the outdoor national record for the second time with a throw of 20.33 meters, at the time it was the best throw this year in female competition but it was bested a day later at the US National Championships by Chase Ealey who is also set to compete at the World Championships.
“I’m trying not to think about the competition differently,” said Mitton, “but it’s changed my perception of what I can do. My goal at the start of the year was making the top 12, but 20 metres, on any given day, is a podium spot.”
“The confidence is high,” she added, “but I still have to make it through the qualifying rounds, so the first goal is to put in one good throw in the first three, and reassessing from there.”
A total of 30 women and 24 men, who have won a total of 15 Olympic medals, will don the red and white in the first edition of this event since 2019 due to the pandemic.
