South Shore Public Libraries are launching a new online book club this summer for teens in an effort to encourage more avid readers.
“We generally see lots of kids and pre-teens with our summer reading programs, so we wanted to try something that would appeal more to teens,” said Charity Fraser of SSPL who is overseeing the book club.
To make it easier for teens to attend all around the South Shore the meetups will be hosted on the popular web meeting platform Discord.
“All the teens need to take part is a computer or a phone or tablet and an internet connection,” said Fraser. She also says the SSPL has enough copies of the books they intend to read that everyone should be able to borrow one if they wish.
The program is free to join, and Fraser says although they intend to do a new book each week participants can choose how much or little they want to participate.
The first session is scheduled to begin Monday, July 11 with Jo Treggiari’s “The Grey Sisters” set as the first book the club will read.
Treggiari is a local author and will be joining the club on one of their sessions to discuss it. Fraser says the books selected this summer vary widely, with selections from local and international authors and a variety of genres like thrillers, mysteries, science fiction and much more.
Currently, the plan is for the book club to run throughout the summer, while teens are out of school, though Fraser says if interest is high she is open to running the program year-round.
The book club will meet weekly on Mondays from 2-3 p.m.
