I follow the Nova Scotia Bird Society on Facebook, just to see what others have been seeing. I not a bird expert by far, but I like to have an idea what I’m seeing. Although I’m still trying to figure out exactly what kind of warbler came by and sat beside me last weekend.
But I have still been seeing hummingbirds around. Maybe not quite as many as I was seeing in the middle of summer, especially just as the young birds fledged and joined the other in draining my feeder every couple of days. So there seen to still be a few around.
And, from pictures on the Nova Scotia Bird Society page, I’m not the only one seeing them. A number of people have been posting pictures of hummingbirds still paying them a visit.
One person in the Bayswater area also posted a picture of a hummingbird at a feeder. Only in this case, it was not the usual Ruby Throated Hummingbird we are used to seeing around here. It was a Rufous Hummingbird.
The Rufous is generally a west coast bird, but he somehow ended up around here this week. I don’t know if he just decided to do a bit of touring around or has a broken compass and flew east instead of south, but it certainly was an interesting sighting.
Not only our many of our usual hummingbirds still hanging around, we’re even getting tourist hummingbirds.
It won’t be long before they pack up their pointy little beaks and head south. But it is nice to see them around while it lasts.
