I have been driving home on the 103 and seeing something that I do not usually see on the highway. Coyotes! I have probably seen about 4 already this fall! Now they are not rare at all but its not like I see them every day. That got me thinking. I wonder if anyone has had any close interactions with coyotes?
I have heard a couple stories in recent years about coyotes in the news (see below) but I myself have never had any experience with them good or bad.
Since it has been nicer out over the last few days here are just a few things to remember if you are going for a walk in the woods and happen to see a coyote!
- Calmly leave the area and walk back the way you came.
- Do not run away
- Carry noise makers and make noise when hiking in the woods
- Make yourself look big and fight back if they become aggressive
All in all if you respect coyotes as wild animals and pay attention to your surroundings, you should be fine!
According to the government of Nova Scotia though there has only been 3 coyote attacks in Novas Scotia since 1995 and only 24 in all of Canada. So the likelihood of getting attacked is pretty rare. I have heard stories of them being aggressive though. My question for you is have you had any interactions with any coyotes and how often do you see them? What happened if you have had dealings with them? Let me know. Remember if you treat animals with respect they will treat you with respect at least I think! 😉
