ChiCan Seafoods Canada are investing a further $15 million towards their operations on Cape Sable Island, taking their total investment in the region to over $45 million.
There latest venture is a new lobster processing facility that will enable them to produce frozen, cooked lobster products, something they previously were unable to do.”
ChiCan COO John Knickerson says that due to various regulations imposed in Canada and internationally facilities that produce and export frozen cooked seafood products the facilities need to be advanced to ensure safety.
The company primarily exports lobster to China and Knickerson says being able to produce new types of products will allow them to capture more of the Chinese market, “There is definitely an appetite for frozen lobster, or cooked frozen lobster in mainland China and this will give us the ability to capitalize on it,” said Knickerson.
Still, Knickerson says that the company’s main focus is ensuring the fishermen they buy lobsters from are receiving a fair price for their catch.
The new facility is already nearly complete with hopes that it will be operational by mid-December of this year. Upon opening it’s expected the new facility will provide around 40 jobs then as it scales up to full operation that will increase closed to 80.
