At first, I thought it was a typo. I was looking at what things might be happening today. Yes, it is groundhog day. It’s also Candlemas, which was forty days after Christmas and about the time we start to notice a bit more light in the world. It was a feast day when candles would be blessed. La Chandeleur is apparently still celebrated in many Acadian communities.
But there is a newer celebration of the day that just started recently. Like last year recently. As of 2021, February 2 is also Brown Dog Day.
Brown dog day sounds similar to groundhog day. Maybe that’s how it started. But I haven’t been able to find out a lot about it. Other than the fact that it exists.
There are a lot of dogs that have some brown in them, and it’s just a day to celebrate brown dogs. Since I happen to have a brown dog, it’s something I can get behind. There are ways suggested to celebrate brown dog day.
If you have a brown dog, make the day all about them. If you don’t have a brown dog, maybe it’s a good day to get one. Or maybe you could make a donation to a local animal shelter. They do more than help just brown dogs, but since brown dogs are amoung the ones the help, it works. You can watch a movie featuring a brown dog. Scooby Doo and Turner and Hootch were amoung the suggestions. Or maybe a few episodes of the Simpsons featuring Santa’s Little Helper.
There are many ways to celebrate brown dog day. Since I have a brown dog and don’t have a groundhog, at least not that I know of, I plane to find some way to celebrate.
It could be that someone I know gets an extra special dinner tonight. And maybe an extra treat.
