Lawyers representing former Chester-St. Margarets Liberal MLA Hugh Mackay submitted a guilty plea for their client during a court appearance in Halifax for charges related to impaired driving on Friday morning.
The charges were made in 2020, though the incident they were in relation to took place in 2018. When it became public knowledge MacKay resigned from his position in the Liberal Caucus but continued in his role as an MLA as an independent.
This now marks the second time the former MLA has pleaded guilty to impaired driving charges, having also plead guilty in 2019.
Mackay did not reoffer for the 2021 provincial election, and his former riding flipped blue with Conservative newcomer Danielle Barkhouse claiming the victory.
Sentencing for Mackay is set to take place at Halifax Provincial Court on February 22.
