The French Bulldog has hit number one, at least according to the American Kennel Club. After a thirty-one year run at the top spot, the Labrador retriever had to settle for being number two.
Golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles, bulldogs, Rottweilers, beagles, dachshunds and German shorthaired pointers round out the top ten of pure bred dogs registrations.
I can see how they got there. French bull dogs are interesting little dogs. They are rather compact and manage to be pretty comical at times, so they fit fairly well with a number of life styles. The Labrador, although a nice dog, is a bit larger. Although a lot of the top ten are larger breeds.
Not everyone seems happy with the fact the Frenchie hit the top spot. People are saying it could lead to more questionable breeders getting involved with the dogs, who are already known for having some respiratory problems because of their smooshed in, cute little faces. Hopefully that will not happen.
And just because they are the top pure bred dog, I’m not sure they would hit number one status overall. The list doesn’t include any mixed breed dogs. Like doodles. And there are a lot of doodles. Not just a lot of different types of doodles, but there seem to be a lot of doodles. You can hardly move without meeting some sort of doodle these days.
Not that I have anything against doodles. Most of them seem to be very nice dogs. At least the ones I have met.
But I’m one of these people who tends to believe there aren’t many bad dogs. Most of them are pretty good, including mixed breeds. Like mine, which is just simply a dog of uncertain origin.
I’m happy for French bull dogs making it to number one, but I like most any dog. Just don’t tell the cats.
