After initial fears were that the Goat Lake Bridge on Highway 103 could be closed for months, Public Works now hopes to have one lane reopen by the end of Wednesday, August 2.
Chester MLA Danielle Barkhouse has been visiting the site daily since the closure, and says she was told by Public Works crews on her visit Wednesday morning that one lane would be reopening in the late afternoon or early evening.
Traffic controls will be put in place when it reopens and Public Works is expected to announce the reopening on their Twitter page when that happens.
That comes as welcome news to Barkhouse who says residents in the community are growing frustrated with the Highway 103 detour which takes traffic along Highway 3 which passes directly through Chester, “It’s been frustrating for people down here with the increase in traffic and the delays in shipping it’s causing, the 3 isn’t designed for this volume of traffic,” Barkhouse said.
Last week engineers determined that the bridge would be able to be repaired, and did not require replacement which was the reason the repairs were originally estimated to take months.
Should the bridge reopen today as expected it will have been closed for twelve days.
