LUNENBURG, Nova Scotia – The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society, a well-known non-profit community organization dedicated to celebrating folk music, has unveiled an exciting lineup of musical performances for its “Weekends at the Opera House” series for Fall 2023. This series promises to offer a blend of musical genres and experiences, with a special emphasis on recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The Fall 2023 series kicks off with a powerful tribute to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 29 and 30, 2023. On the 29th, Anishinaabe musician Leonard Sumner and Indigenous singer-songwriter April Martell will grace the stage, shedding light on crucial issues such as missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, racism against First Nations communities, and the legacy of residential schools. Following that, on September 30, ECMA Indigenous Artist of the Year, Mi’kmaw fiddler and singer, Morgan Toney, will continue to amplify these vital narratives through his music.
The remainder of the series promises an eclectic mix of musical talent, showcasing soulful sounds, emerging Cape Breton artists, seasoned singer-songwriters, and two festive holiday celebrations:
- October 13: Allen Snow, the 2023 ECMA Winner for Blues Recording of the Year, and his band the Quorum will take the stage.
- October 14: Albertan John Wort Hannam and Winnipeg’s Sweet Alibi will provide a memorable musical experience.
- October 27: Singer-songwriters Jodi Guthro and Dave Sampson will share their captivating melodies.
- October 28: The high-energy band Pretty Archie from Cape Breton will get the audience moving.
- November 10: Ian Sherwood with Geoff Arsenault and Mike Farrington Jr. will offer a diverse musical experience.
- November 11: Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Irish Mythen will captivate with her storytelling.
- November 24: Reeny Smith’s Family Christmas promises holiday cheer.
- November 25: Lennie Gallant and the Innkeeper’s Christmas will conclude the series on a festive note.
Folk Harbour Society President, Louis Robitaille, expressed his enthusiasm for the diverse lineup, stating, “We are delighted to present a diverse and gender-balanced lineup of musicians for our stage this fall.
