With unrelenting extreme weather conditions plaguing Nova Scotia, numerous residents have grappled with parched wells throughout this summer season. In a bid to address this pressing issue, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg has taken decisive action, expanding their commitment to assisting residents beyond the confines of temporary solutions.
Historically, the Municipality has extended aid through its Dry Well Program, which distributed free water coupons redeemable at local retailers. This initiative, aimed at providing immediate relief, will persist. However, recognizing the need for a more sustainable approach, the Municipality has unveiled the Potable Water Supply Upgrade Lending Program.
Sustainable Solutions for Sustainable Water Supply
The Potable Water Supply Upgrade Lending Program seeks to empower homeowners in the Municipality, enabling them to permanently enhance their potable water supply systems. This initiative offers low-interest financing options for various portable water upgrades, including:
- New Well Installation: Residents can apply for financing to dig new wells on their properties, ensuring a more consistent water source.
- Rainwater Collection and Storage Systems: The program supports the installation of rainwater collection and storage systems, such as cisterns, to augment water reserves.
- Well Pump and Water Line Enhancements: Financing can be utilized for the installation or upgrading of well pumps, water lines, and electrical connections, vital components for a robust water system.
- Potable Water Improvement Systems: Homeowners can access funds for systems and equipment aimed at enhancing water supply, usage efficiency, and conservation.
Crucially, this program alleviates the burden on homeowners by not requiring upfront payments. The lending period spans 15 years, offering a highly favorable interest rate of just 2%.
Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are pleased to be able to offer help to homeowners and improve the supply of potable water for homes in the Municipality.”
