The stop work order for the Donkin coal which was imposed in July following a rockfall in the mine has been lifted by the province.
In an official statement, the Nova Scotia Government announced that Kameron Coal Management Ltd. has the option to resume production, having successfully fulfilled the safety requirements outlined in the phase 1 compliance order.
Scott Nauss, the Department’s Senior Executive Director of Safety, stated, “The Department is satisfied that Kameron Coal has met the conditions outlined in the compliance order. We will continue to closely oversee this intricate worksite to ensure the company prioritizes safety measures for its workers.”
As part of phase 2, the company is mandated to engage an independent third-party engineer to assess the mine’s ground control plan before March, as specified by the province.
The 130-member workforce at the mine was laid off by Kameron Coal following the shutdown in July.
