The Government of Nova Scotia has revealed plans for new public housing developments in Bridgewater and Kentville, aimed at addressing the critical need for safe and affordable housing in the province.
In Bridgewater, Becky Druhan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and MLA for Lunenburg West, announced the construction of new public housing at the site of Pineview Apartments on 59 Exhibition Dr. Construction is set to commence in spring 2025, with completion expected by fall 2026.
The new three-storey building will comprise 21 units, featuring a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, providing homes for up to 94 people. Emphasizing accessibility, the first floor will be fully accessible.
Similarly, in Kentville, Housing Minister John Lohr announced the development of new public housing at the site of Hilltop Manor on 55 Oakdene Ave. Construction is slated to begin later this year, with completion targeted for fall 2025. The two-story building will offer 11 units, accommodating up to 25 individuals, with the first floor also designed for full accessibility.
These developments are part of a broader initiative to address the housing crisis in Nova Scotia. The government previously announced plans for a total of 222 new public housing units across the province, with 150 units allocated for Halifax Regional Municipality and additional sites to be disclosed soon.
The selection of these sites was based on various factors, including property suitability, capacity for expansion, demand for public housing, and proximity to essential services and amenities.
The government’s investment in these public housing units totals $58.8 million, with an additional $24.4 million contributed by the federal government. Furthermore, the recent announcement of 25 new modular public housing units to be installed province-wide by March 2025 underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to address housing challenges in Nova Scotia.
