The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) announced a significant boost to Lunenburg’s tourism sector with a non-repayable contribution of $137,000 from the Government of Canada.
Minister of Rural Economic Development and ACOA, Gudie Hutchings, unveiled this investment, highlighting the importance of tourism for both local communities and the broader Canadian economy. Lunenburg’s unique blend of historic charm and contemporary attractions makes it a prime candidate for strategic tourism development.
Under the Strategic Tourism Expansion Program (STEP), Lunenburg will collaborate with a dedicated facilitator to craft a comprehensive regional tourism plan. This initiative aims to harness the town’s distinctive economic, environmental, and cultural assets, ensuring a tailored approach to sustainable tourism growth. By improving hosting capabilities, diversifying experiential offerings, and extending the tourism season, Lunenburg aims to captivate visitors and encourage longer stays.
The allocated funds will support various aspects of plan development and implementation, including engaging expert consultation, conducting marketing campaigns, conducting research, and enhancing tourism infrastructure.
Minister Hutchings emphasized the Government of Canada’s commitment to empowering Atlantic Canadian communities to leverage tourism opportunities for job creation and economic prosperity.
Mayor Jamie Myra echoed Minister Hutchings’ sentiments, expressing optimism about the transformative impact of this investment on Lunenburg’s economic future. The initiative not only promises to elevate Lunenburg’s status as a premier tourist destination but also seeks to foster sustainable growth, benefitting local businesses and enhancing the town’s cultural vibrancy.
