Update: As of 4:32 p.m. power has been restored in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay.
Around 2,000 homes are without power around Lunenburg and Mahone Bay as of Friday morning, with Nova Scotia Power estimating it will be restored by 4:00 p.m,.
It began around 3:00 a.m. with Nova Scotia Power attributing it to a transmission issue.
As a result, many schools in the area were closed on Friday.
The Town of Mahone Bay also issued a notice that some of their critical infrastructure is on reserve power and they are asking residents to reduce the strain on the wastewater system during the outage by limiting running water and flushing.
The Lunenburg Fire Hall has also opened to the public, and is providing power for those who need to charge their phone.
Lunenburg has also closed its recreation facilities for the day as a result of the outage.
