Lunenburg MLA Susan Corkum Greek had a busy day on Tuesday announcing over $8 million in investments around her constituency.
Her first stop was in Lunenburg where she was making an announcement on behalf of of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
It included $5.6 million for four projects which include: the Green Street sidewalk renewal project in Lunenburg, the expansion of the Cookville wastewater treatment facility and new, accessible sidewalks on Nathan Cirillo Road and Pine Grove Road in Cookville.
“We need municipal services if we want to grow our population, build more homes and businesses, and create the kinds of strong communities where we all want to live,” said Corkum-Greek.
Municipality of the District of Lunenburg Carolyn Bolivar Getson indicated the investments in Cookville will go hand in hand with the development work currently taking place in Osprey Village, particularly the sidewalks which will allow people to safely walk to Bridgewater. “The housing crisis in Nova Scotia has placed a huge strain on our communities, this investment will allow for much-needed infrastructure in Osprey Village to address continued housing needs and growth in our area,”.
Community grant funding
Corkum-Greeks’ second stop of the day was at the West Northfield Community Hall where she announced eight recipients of community grants.
The largest recipients were the Dynamite Trail Association who were awarded $1.8 million and the Town of Mahone Bay which is getting $1 million to support their outdoor pool.
The money going towards the trail will go towards repairs for both the Mushamush River Bridge and Martins River Bridge which are both over 100 years old.
Other recipients included:
- Indian Point Volunteer Fire Department $50,000 to replace a damaged roof and ceiling
- Walden Volunteer Fire Department $49,440 replace a bay door and do interior painting
- Lunenburg Marine Museum Society $32,500 to repair their Cape Sable trawler
- West Northfield Community Centre $24,184 for roof and kitchen upgrades
- Lunenburg Farmers’ Market Association $4,444 for portable handwashing stations
- Mahone Bay Founders Society $4,335 for window repairs, stairs, shingling and insulation.
Corkum Greek after her announcement in West Northfield noted that most of the investments are for building repairs or upkeep which she feels are particularly important after last year’s adverse weather showed the importance of community organizations and their facilities. “These are places where people are able to gather for comfort of during emergencies in addition to what they normally offer, so for every dollar we put in we are able to leverage so much more out of it,”.
The investment in the pool was particularly important to the Lunenburg MLA who said her late father made a point of making time to ensure he could take them to daily family swims, “The pool was such a big part of our summers with many of my most cherished memories taking place there, so I am so happy to be announcing funds for the Mahone Bay Pool which will go to repairs, as well as help looking ahead to an eventual replacement,”.
