For me, summer is reading time. For some reason, I don’t tend to curl up in front of the fire with a good book over the winter. But during the summer, show me a comfy deck chair and some light reading, and I’m good to go.
I say light reading, because I’m not l0oking for something I have to think about too much. And naps could be involved. Which is a good reason to make sure you are wearing sunglasses. Then no one can tell.
But I have tried some more involved literature. I have made attempts at James Joyce’s Ulysses a few times now. I have yet to make it through. But if I have trouble falling asleep it works really well. Possibly because there is too much thinking involved. My brain gets overwhelmed and just turns off. So I tend to read a lot of mysteries and horror and stuff like that.
I noticed the other day there is a new Stephen King book out. That would certainly fit with what I am looking for. Then you have the writers who put out about three books per week, or seem to. A lot of times with unheard of co-writers, possibly so they can keep up with the amount they are churning out.
And then there are even more mysterious books that appear. I noticed what seemed to be a new novel from Clive Cussler. Since he passed away last year I was wondering how he manages to produce new material these days. Until I noticed it was actually written by someone else. It would seem they are using his name for marketing purposes. Or maybe it’s a continuation of some of his characters.
But I need to stock up on the summer reading material. I have a deck chair ready and waiting. There may even be a cold beverage ready to be poured.
