Last week, the province came up with new rules regarding cell phones and students. Mostly, they have to put them away or turn them off during class time. There are some exceptions, but generally it seems to make sense.
Since I grew up in a time when calculators were mostly banned from schools, it certainly makes sense to me. Yes, I am the old. But there was a fear that we would never be able to do math problems on our own if we came to rely on a calculator.
I’m certainly glad they banned calculators. Otherwise, I’d never be able to solve complex quadratic equations in my head. Oh wait… I can’t. Then again, I can’t do them with a calculator anymore either. Mostly because I have never found a need to do it in life. But I could do it back then. You know. Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Although I will say I find the cell phone handy. Questions you don’t know the answer to you can quickly find out by using Google. It does make things easier. But do we learn anything? Other than knowing how to look things up online?
But getting away from social media and the demands it places on life these days seems like a good thing. And focusing on actual school work does as well.
It seems like a good idea to me. And something that should have taken place ages ago.
Then again, being constantly connected has never seemed like a good idea to me. I’m quite happy there isn’t photographic evidence of some of the things I got up to years ago.
If a few people learn they don’t always need to be connected to function, that might be a good thing.
