The province of Nova Scotia has announced the recipients of this year’s Age-Friendly Community Grants.
The grant aims to support community-wide efforts to create age-friendly environments and promote healthy aging.
This year there are 44 organizations receiving support totaling $530,000.
Seniors Minister Barbra Adams announced the recipients in Mahone Bay. She was joined by members of Coastal Action who were awarded $10,000 in grant funding to help expand their community garden and make it more accessible.
“This community garden is a wonderful example of the many ways groups across the province are creating opportunities for seniors to stay active, connect with others and socialize,” said Adams. “Seniors have so much to share. By supporting community-led efforts, the grants are helping older Nova Scotians age well and remain vibrant members of their communities.”
Following the announcement Adams also commented that there has been a shift in the types of programs being supported by the grant in recent years.
“It was mostly physical activities and social programs- card games and things like that,” Adams said. “In the last ten years, it has shifted to digital literacy, food programs, transportation and supporting those with economic challenges.”
