RCMP in Nova Scotia are reporting their recent trial using body cameras was a success.
“The cameras did everything we wanted them to, and they fulfilled all their contractual obligations,” said RCMP spokesman Mitch Thompson.
Between March and February officers from four traffic units – including Chester, New Minas, North Sydney, and Yarmouth Rural – along with detachments in Digby, Pictou, and Stellarton participated in the field test.
The RCMP contracted Axon Public Safety Canada Inc. to supply the cameras as well as provide a data management service for the videos recorded.
“We’re looking for a tool that will improve transparency, while also providing a first-person view of what a police encounter in often tense situations,” said Thompson.
Thompson says all of the officers he’s spoken to who took part in the test had positive reactions and are looking forward to their wider rollout.
With the trial now complete the Nova Scotia RCMP are finalizing their plans for a province-wide rollout. During that time they’ll be determining which detachments and units will be prioritized, and coordinate training sessions.
No timetable was provided on when the full rollout plan will be available, however, the RCMP indicated they hope to have all officers in the province equipped with body cameras by mid-2025.
