You might say it is the season, but I have been going a bit overboard on the strawberries lately. And it really is the time of year.
Checking the usual food holidays, I noticed today is “Strawberry Parfait Day”. Last Thursday was “Pick Strawberries Day”. And Friday would be “Strawberry Cream Pie Day”. You might think it was strawberry season.
Of course, it is strawberry season. But really, newer varieties of berries have kept the season going for most of the summer. And you can get them all year round. But there is something about fresh local berries. They just taste extra special.
I will admit I have never made a strawberry cream pie, but I have a couple days to work on that. Or just keep eating berries, because they are good on their own. But the dessert of the day does sound interesting.
But the strawberry parfait does sound interesting for today. If you’re wondering how to make one, the traditional parfait is a dessert of ice cream or frozen custard layered with fruit and whipped cream in a tall stemmed glass. An additional topping of whipped cream garnishes the dessert. It goes on to say that often the ice cream is replaced with yogurt or pudding and layers of granola. But we don’t have to get carried away. I’d say ice cream, strawberries and a little whipped cream on top might be perfect. Actually, just strawberries and ice cream. Or strawberries and whipped cream. Or just strawberries. And the fancy glassware just sounds like more work on the cleanup end. So a dish of berries would be just fine. Maybe with some of that ice cream.
Basically, I don’t need a special day to eat strawberries. It’s Tuesday. That’s good enough for me.
