The Big Ex is concerned about what not having a local livestock veterinarian will mean for them in the future.
In June, South Shore Veterinary Hospital announced they’d be ceasing large animal services in the fall, and suspending equine services as of August 16.
Once they stop offering those services the next nearest vet that does would be located in the Annapolis Valley.
“After this exhibition, we will no longer have a local vet on call who can be close by to help us if needed,” said Big Ex General Manager Tammy Rowter. “If need be we will have to reach out to someone else who can service our needs.”
Rowter says while they aren’t required to have a vet in order to put on the exhibition it’s a common practice at most exhibitions around the country.
“People love and care for these animals, so we feel a responsibility to ensure a vet is around and available should any urgent matters come up,” Rowter said.
In addition to the challenges posed directly to The Big Ex by the lack of a local vet, Rowter also says it will be worse for exhibitors. “We only really rely on a vet one week of the year, whereas our exhibitors have to take care of these animals’ health year-round.”
The Big Ex will take place this year from July 22-28 and this year will feature the return International Horse Pull.
