It wasn’t the ending Sarah Mitton had envisioned in Paris having finished 12th, but she’s already looking forward to her next Olympic games.
In the women’s shot put finals, Mitton failed to make it into the top eight after her throw which was near the 20-metre mark was invalidated after she stepped out of bounds.
Had it been valid she would have made it to the final heat where she would have gotten more attempts to make the podium.
The gold was ultimately claimed by German Yemisi Ogunleye with a throw of exactly 20 metres.
Mitton came into the finals as the highest-ranked shotputter and has previously thrown past the 20-metre mark, with a personal best of 20.68 metres.
After the event, Mitton took to social media to thank all of her friends, family and coaches that helped her on her journey to Paris as well as to put the result into perspective.
“Despite an improvement in results and a different set of expectations, I wasn’t able to rise to the challenge on the day that it mattered most – that is the life of an athlete. You get to enjoy and share the highest of highs as well as your lowest moments. I will continue to wear the good and the bad proudly, as this is the other side of sport.”
“A big thank you to each and everyone of you across the world, but especially my fellow Canadians – from sand art on the NS beach, messages from all the way up to the Arctic Ocean and each of the messages of support I received despite the final results.”
Mitton also wrote that she took pride in being a two-time Olympian and is planning on becoming a three-timer at LA 2028.
