Ottawa has announced support for Veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
More than $6.7 million will go toward two projects under the Veteran Homelessness Program.
Housing Minister Sean Fraser said VETS Canada will receive around $5 million for its Ground Support for Veterans project.
“To help with rent supplements to help close the gap between what a person can afford and what’s available, making sure that you’re helping people find temporary accommodations, covering some of the moving costs,” said Fraser.
The goal of the project is to help Veterans transition into stable homes and care for their mental and physical health while helping them strengthen skills such as financial management.
It also focuses on developing a network of relationships with landlords and communities that can help facilitate permanent homes.
Meanwhile, Landing Strong Cooperative will also receive funding to provide Veterans in Nova Scotia with wraparound services such as financial assistance.
Fraser said there are too many Veterans across the country who do not have a place to call home.
“Our estimates are as high as 2,600 Veterans across Canada are experiencing homelessness. This is unacceptable to me,” he added.
Through the $79.1-million Veteran Homelessness Program, the federal government will partner with organizations across the country to provide rent supplements and mental health support to Veterans.
