Annapolis Royal has made history by electing an all-women council and mayor for the first time during it’s most recent municipal election.
Founded in 1605, the town has a legacy of ‘firsts’ in municipal elections, having previously elected Daurene Lewis as Canada’s first Black woman mayor in 1984.
The newly elected councillors include Adele MacDonald, Lynn Myers, Heather Sadkowski, and Sybil Skinner Robertson, with Amery Boyer re-elected as mayor.
The town has just over 500 voters.
Historically, women have been underrepresented in municipal politics. A 2023 report by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities found that women made up only 31 percent of all municipal elected representatives in Canada.
