Queens County will have a full-time senior safety coordinator following a decision by the Region of Queens council.
At their first meeting since the October 19 municipal election, councillors voted to provide up to $35,000 to Lunenburg County Home Support to fund the position until October 2025.
The role promotes senior health, safety, and independence, helping older residents remain in their homes.
Queens Care Society, a local non-profit, asked council in August to consider making the coordinator a full-time position. The society said its current funding—$25,000 from the provincial government and $5,000 from the Region of Queens—was not enough to expand the role.
Previously under a part-time contract the safety coordinator worked three days, with the new funding, the position will expand to five days a week.
Council’s decision comes after Queens Home Support, which previously oversaw the program, closed earlier this year due to financial challenges. Lunenburg County Home Support now manages those services.
The full-time funding will allow the municipality and the home support group to assess the program’s impact and determine whether longer-term support is feasible.
