A new survey by Rentals.ca has found that renters in Ontario and Atlantic Canada are facing significant challenges, with affordability and limited availability topping the list of concerns.
The survey of over 600 prospective renters shows that 69 per cent of respondents cited affordability as their main concern, while 55 per cent expressed frustration with the lack of budget-friendly options.
In Ontario, supply shortages are making rental searches longer and more competitive. The survey revealed that 34 percent of participants have been searching for a rental for over two months, and 15 percent for more than six months. “Ontario’s rental market is under significant pressure, with demand outpacing supply in many areas,” said David Aizikov, Senior Data Analyst at Rentals.ca.
Atlantic Canada renters reported similar concerns, despite some satisfaction with the quality of rental units.
Limited affordable options remain a key challenge in the region, particularly as more people show interest in moving there. Nationally, 19 percent of renters indicated they are considering relocating to a new city, a trend that includes Atlantic Canada as a growing destination.
The survey also highlighted shifting priorities among renters across Canada. While 63 percent identified price as their top concern, only 37 percent prioritized location.
Rentals.ca conducted this survey in August 2024, gathering insights from renters in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta. While the survey focused on prospective renters, the findings reflect broader trends affecting the Canadian rental market.
