Tickets for the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials, set to take place in Liverpool, N.S., from December 30 to January 4, are now on sale, kicking off the Road to 2026 Olympics.
The event is expected to provide a major economic boost to the area, with an estimated impact of at least $1 million, according to Greg Thorbourne, who is leading the organizing committee.
“This is a big event for our community, not just in terms of the sport, but for the local economy,” Thorbourne said. “The trials will bring visitors to the region, and we anticipate a direct economic impact of at least $1 million through spending on accommodation, dining, and local services.”
The event will take place at the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool and is the first stop on the Road to 2026, a series of events that will determine the teams representing Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan/Cortina.
Technically the team that wins the trials will be entitled to represent Canada, but Canada still has to qualify at the World Mixed Doubles which will take place in May. Thourbourne however said that Canada failing to qualify would be extremely unlikely.
Thorbourne highlighted the importance of collaboration between various local groups to bring the event to life. “A key element in hosting a successful event like this is the involvement of our local icemakers and volunteers, who will work tirelessly to ensure the ice is in perfect condition,” he said. “It takes a lot of work behind the scenes, and we’re lucky to have a dedicated team in our community who make these events possible.”
“These events are essential to growing the sport in the region and supporting the local economy,” Thorbourne added. “Liverpool will be on the map as a key location in the Road to 2026, and we’re looking forward to welcoming curling fans to our community.”
