The Thomas H. Raddall Library in Liverpool is close to reopening, but a few final steps remain before the public can fully access the new location on Harley Umphrey Drive.
Starting today, visitors can pick up pre-ordered books at the library, though browsing is not yet allowed as the branch is still waiting for its occupancy permit. A final fire inspection and internet setup also need to be completed before the library can fully open.
The move from downtown Liverpool took place in December, with the municipality budgeting up to $1.26 million for renovations.
Some residents have raised concerns about accessibility, as the new location lacks sidewalks and has limited lighting. To help address this, Queens County Transit and South Shore Public Libraries are offering free transportation from downtown Liverpool to the library every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The new space is larger, fully accessible, and includes a community kitchen and program room. Raised garden beds will also be added outside with support from the Nova Scotia government.
While the branch remains closed for anything other than pick-ups for now, a grand reopening is planned for April 5.
