RCMP have arrested five men after executing search warrants at an illegal cannabis storefront in Eskasoni and a residence in Howie Centre.
Officers searched the storefront on Shore Road, arresting two men from Eskasoni, ages 32 and 37. A 41-year-old man from Eskasoni was arrested at the home in Howie Centre. Police seized a large quantity of illegal cannabis, psilocybin, unstamped tobacco, a rifle, ammunition, cash, and a vehicle.
The three men are facing charges under the Cannabis Act for possessing cannabis for distribution and sale, as well as charges under the Excise Act. The 41-year-old is also charged with unlawful firearm possession and careless use of a firearm.
As police searched the storefront, a small group of protesters gathered nearby. Later, seven people from a nearby residence attempted to disrupt the scene. As officers were leaving, a 32-year-old Eskasoni man allegedly blocked their way while wielding a large piece of wood. Police say he resisted arrest, leading an officer to use a taser. He has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, and resisting arrest. Another 32-year-old man was charged with obstruction after allegedly interfering in the arrest.
All five men were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in Eskasoni Provincial Court on June 3.
The RCMP’s investigation involved multiple units, including Criminal Intelligence Services Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Integrated Proceeds of Crime team.
The arrests follow an earlier enforcement operation against illegal cannabis storefronts, which led to protests and a dispute over Indigenous cannabis rights. While some claim the right to sell cannabis under treaty agreements, RCMP maintain that sales must comply with federal and provincial laws.
The RCMP reminds residents that cannabis can only be legally purchased at licensed NSLC locations.
