A good number of years ago I said goodbye to my last propane barbecue. It had decomposed into something to put at the side of the road.
I wasn’t in a hurry to replace it because to tell the truth I never really enjoyed the food we cooked on it.
One day while shopping at the grocery store I saw some heavily discounted old school charcoal barbecues and picked one up as an impulse buy.
Picked up a bag of charcoal and some charcoal lighter fluid and brought it home and then spent way too much time trying to get the briquets to catch.
We had supper a couple hours late, and I swear I could taste the chemical lighter fluid on the food.
Then I discovered a charcoal chimney. It’s just a metal tube with an offset handle that you put a couple of crumpled sheets of flyer paper in the bottom, and fill with charcoal.
In 15 to 20 minutes all the charcoal has caught and you pour it into the barbeque and start grilling.
I’ve never looked back. No charcoal lighter fluid needed and it’s easy to tell when you need to pick up another bag of charcoal.
Two questions for you:
Propane or charcoal?
And what is your favourite thing to put on the barbeque?
Mine is shish kebabs with both meat and veggies.
