The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is planning to offer an extended lobster season to harvesters impacted by the ongoing wildfire in Shelburne County.
Shelburne County is home to LFA 33/34 which is the most productive lobster fishery in the world, and it is currently in the final few days of the lobster season.
The fire has limited how much fishing can take place with many families and fishermen being forced to evacuate their homes and the area for the time being.
DFO Minister Joyce Murray also said many fishermen are unable to work because they also serve as volunteer firefighters and many of them are actively fighting the wildfire in Shelburne County.
Further details on how the extension will work and who will be eligible are expected in the coming days.
As the wildfires continue in Nova Scotia, harvesters in LFAs 33/34 impacted will have an extension to their season.
