Ever since I was a kid I couldn’t wrap my mind around my parent’s favourite ice cream flavour – Grape Nut.
It’s supposedly a Nova Scotia invention, allegedly created by chef Hannah Young at The Palms restaurant in Wolfville in 1919. She created it when she ran out of fresh fruit to add to ice cream and decided to throw in some grapenuts cereal. It proved popular at the restaurant and the Scotsburn Dairy company began mass-producing the ice cream variety, and it sold across the region.
My favourite ice cream flavour is candy cane, but it’s hard to find outside of the Christmas season.
But the flavour I can’t stand is another Maritime creation – Moon Mist.
I would like just a banana and grape ice cream, but it’s the blue part – bubblegum that makes my teeth ache.
What flavour ice cream would you turn down on a hot summer day?
