The last of three derelict ships being removed from the LaHave River just outside of Bridgewater has been hauled away.
The Hannah Atlantic was the largest of the three boats to be removed.
Starting in the spring the Coast Guard began overseeing work to remove the ships that Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell characterized as a major eyesore for the community.
They also posed contamination risks as the ships were deteriorating. Unlike previous ship removals, the three vessels removed were not towed down the LaHave River, but rather they were dismantled onsite to avoid any potential spills that may have occurred on the water.
Now that the ships are gone work will resume on cleaning up the work site and remediating it. It is expected to take until November and until it is complete the Coast Guard is asking the public to stay away from the work site, which is located at the bottom of Glen Allen Drive on the riverbank.
