The Parade of Paddlers is set to take place on Sunday, in Bridgewater, as part of the town’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
With over 150 paddlers registered, the event is expected to feature a wide array of watercraft, including kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards.
Participants will navigate the LaHave River, departing from Shipyards Landing at 11:30 a.m. for an hour-long route through downtown Bridgewater, under both the old and new bridges.
On the route, they will also pass the newly unveiled Bridgewater sign, which is being unveiled at an event Friday night at Pijinuiskaq Park.
Among the highlights is the participation of Mi’kmaq master birchbark canoe builder Todd Labrador, whose family has deep ties to the LaHave River. Labrador’s handcrafted 21-foot birchbark canoe will be present, and Parks Canada interpreters will paddle one of his 16-foot canoes.
Spectators can view the parade from several points along the river.
The event is free for paddlers, though registration is required.
In addition to the parade there are other events taking place this weekend around Bridgewater, including the Harvest Moon Music Festival and a Ride the River cycling event hosted by Cycling Nova Scotia.
