Cape Breton–Canso MP Mike Kelloway has announced his endorsement of Mark Carney in the race to become the next leader of the federal Liberal Party. Kelloway, in a video filmed with Cape Breton’s iconic Scottish fiddle as a backdrop, described Carney as “down to earth, experienced, and ready to lead.”
Kelloway cited Carney’s leadership at the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, as well as his focus on economic issues that matter to Canadians, as reasons for his endorsement. “Mark isn’t a politician,” Kelloway said. “He gets the economy and the bread-and-butter issues for Canadians.”
Carney is one of six approved candidates in the leadership race, which will determine both the next Liberal leader and the country’s potential future prime minister. Alongside Carney, notable candidates include Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, and former Liberal MPs Ruby Dhalla and Frank Baylis.
The leadership contest follows Justin Trudeau’s decision to step down, with candidates required to meet stringent entry requirements, including raising $350,000 and collecting 300 nomination signatures. The winner will be decided on March 9.
Carney and Freeland are considered frontrunners, with both securing significant endorsements.
The Liberals will select their new leader on March 9.
