Parents and caregivers looking for strategies to support children with anxiety can take part in a free, five-week online program offered by Nova Scotia Health.
The “Helping Your Anxious Child” sessions begin February 6 and run weekly until March 6. Led by community support professionals Sarah Swinamer and Vicki Zinck, the program provides education and tools to help parents navigate their child’s anxiety. Sessions take place on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. via Telehealth Zoom.
The program, originally held in person, has transitioned online, making it accessible to families across the province. Swinamer said in addition to the structured content, one of the biggest benefits is the opportunity for parents to connect with others facing similar challenges.
“The numbers have changed,” said Swinamer. “It used to be one in four people had anxiety, but it’s more than that.”
“Part of it is also because it is being talked about more, people are open to talking about it more – and stigma is being decreased. We’re trying to break down the barriers.”
While the sessions focus on children under the age of 12, many of the strategies discussed can be applied across different age groups. Topics include relaxation techniques, managing fears, celebrating progress, and making lifestyle adjustments to support mental well-being.
The program, based in Lunenburg County, is modeled after a successful initiative in the Annapolis Valley. Zinck noted that demand remains high, with sessions held three times per year and attracting around 30 participants each time.
“Between us and the Annapolis Valley, we run these sessions usually three times per year,” Zinck said.
Notices for the program are shared through schools, daycares, and social media, leading to widespread participation. Swinamer said families from Cape Breton to Yarmouth have joined in past sessions.
“We give them tools, and it’s really effective because we make it a group discussion,” Zinck explained. “Some of the parents feed off of that and take advice from others, in addition to what we offer.”
At the start of each session, facilitators review previous discussions and assigned exercises, ensuring that participants are able to build on their knowledge each week.
