Nova Scotia’s Sarah Mitton delivered the world’s best indoor shot put throw in more than a decade on Friday, winning a top international competition in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Mitton secured victory with a 20.68-metre throw on her final attempt, matching her own Canadian record. She finished ahead of Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands, who threw 20.09 metres, and two-time world champion Chase Jackson of the U.S., who posted 20.06 metres. Olympic gold medalist Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany placed fourth with 19.49 metres.
The throw marked the first time since the 1991 World Indoor Championships that three women have surpassed 20 metres in an indoor competition.
Mitton, 28, had the top throw in qualifying at the Paris Olympics but finished 12th in the final.
She later won gold at the Diamond League final in Belgium and took silver at the 2023 World Outdoor Championships.
