It’s National Aboriginal Day.
Events are taking place throughout the country, celebrating the culture and heritage of First Nations, Metis and Inuit.
The day was first recognized in 1996.
It was proclaimed that year by then Governor General of Canada Roméo LeBlanc.
The date – June 21 – was chosen for its cultural significance with the summer solstice.
Also, it’s was a day many Aboriginal groups traditionally celebrate their heritage.
