The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia has announced his retirement.
The Honourable Joseph P. Kennedy will step down May 1, 2019.
Kennedy is a native of Enfield and graduated Dalhousie Law School in 1965.
After being called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1969, Kennedy practiced law in Bridgewater with the firm of Kenny, Theakston, Kennedy and Allen.
He was appointed to the Bench in September 1978 and presided over Provincial Court primarily in Bridgewater and Lunenburg.
In 1997 he was elevated to the Supreme Court.
Kennedy was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court a year later.
The selection process to find his replacement is now underway.
The federal Cabinet will appoint the next Chief Justice based on the Prime Ministers recommendations.
