A controversial art installation in Bridgewater will be staying put.
Town council voted to quash the order to have the partial hull of the MV Farley Mowat removed from Brian MacNevin’s lawn.
The town had received complaints that the piece was unsightly and dangerous.
Councillor Bill McInnis says council was swayed by presentations from MacNevin and his lawyer Kathryn Dumke that explained the artistic and historic value of the piece.
“Council wants to really promote arts and culture in our town. From that point of view, we think a mutually acceptable arrangement was made here to support the artist.”
In what may be a first in Nova Scotia, the order was rescinded based on its artistic merit.
Councillor McInnis says MacNevin made a compelling argument.
“I don’t think there’s any question that council supports the art and culture aspect of it. Farley Mowat is a very well known name, well respected name.”
MacNevin has agreed to bring the installation up to town safety standards by April.

And Brian MacNevin is very pleased with council’s decision.
He says it validates the Nova Scotia Status of the Artist Act.
“This is the legislation saying that the role of the creative individual in society is important. Well, bless their heart.”
MacNevin says this may be the first time the act has been used to defend art in this way.
He says his intent wasn’t to upset his neighbours but to provoke a conversation.
“I love talking about the work. I’m a retired guy and I’m usually at home. If they want to bang at the door and come in for tea and talk about the work. I’m more than happy to spend time talking about that project with people.”
He says the work will stay up until it can be completed with a bed of blooming poppies next summer.
After that, he will be looking to find a more permanent home for the former MV Farley Mowat.
