Before I go to far, I will say that I am a big fan of the various types of energy efficient light bulbs. I will admit to not being a big fan of some of the various shades, but I tend to go for the “warm” shades, which solves that problem.
What I am not a total fan of is the lack of heat.
For some time I have put a light bulb in with my pump in colder weather. It tends to supply just the right amount of heat to keep the pump from freezing, but not so much heat that it could be a fire hazard.
Except I’m running out of regular light bulbs.
I have lots of light bulbs, but they tend to be other types. L.E.D. or compact fluorescent or whatever they are, they are great at making things light, just not so great at throwing off heat. In this case, I was looking for heat, not light.
I like the saving money and the using less energy. I’m all for that. But turning on one little light bulb seemed like a fairly safe way to keep the pump warm for the winter. But it’s getting harder to do.
You can still find the old style incandescent light bulbs, but they’re getting harder to come by. I still have a few hiding in basements and sheds and in lamps I haven’t turned on in years, but they’re getting harder to come by. Some day, I’ll run out and have to figure out another solution. I still may be able to cast away the dark, but the cold… that’s another story.
