Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for retail stores, but is it necessary to be open on Christmas Eve?
Tony Lohnes doesn’t think so or at least he thinks the hours should be reduced.
He started a petition five years ago that now has over 600 signatures and calls the expectation on business unfair and hypocritical.
“It doesn’t make sense in our society, government workers get the day off and I think if our elected officials can have the day off so can retail employees.”
His petition accepts the reality of the retail world and how busy the holidays can be, the petition calls for all business to be ceased by 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
He does, however, feel the value of Christmas Eve shopping is overrated.
“I don’t know how many stores I see Christmas Eve that you could roll a bowling ball down the aisle and not hit a soul, they are empty.”
He also says this is an opportunity to be more environmentally friendly.
“They keep the lights on a lot throughout the holidays and I just think that it is not the right message to send if you are a business. That says they care about the environment.”
