On Monday night the Town of Lunenburg hosted a public information session on the possible reclassification of six lots near Tannery Rd.
The lots are all owned by ABCO who are one of the community’s largest employers.
ABCO is trying to remove the lots from the Architecture Control Area (ACA). According to their owner Jason Huskilson in order to remain competitive, it is necessary to change the classification.
He says the company needs to add more space primarily for storage. The problem is the ACA makes it so anyone expanding their space by more than twenty-five per cent is required to complete a more thorough application process with stricter standards.
The public meeting saw many concerned community members voice their opinions. Amongst those who spoke opinions were split with some not willing to compromise the regulations that protect Lunenburg’s heritage. Others expressed that ABCO has been a vital member of the community for over 70 years and they should be able to operate with more autonomy on their property.
Following the comments from the public, Mr. Huskilson again addressed the community to clarify his plans.
He said they had no plans to significantly alter or change some of the smaller buildings on the lots or demolish landmarks like Camp Norway but that the new developments would be focused on the main facilities of ABCO and expanding their floor space.
